THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

           And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Creator God, you spoke the Word and our world came into being,

and with your strong and gentle voice you call us

into conversation with you.

When we became deaf, when we stopped our ears or tried to shout above the sound of your love, you kept on speaking.

Down through the ages, through prophets, poets and        preachers, you have spoken to us.

In the fullness of time, you sent Jesus, your Word made flesh,

in whom we hear and see and come to know you.

In Jesus, all creation learned to sing your song of love.

By Jesus, the poor and lowly were given voice.

But there were those who sought to silence Jesus,

those for whom the Word was too much.

           They were too busy with other words;

they could not and would not listen to Jesus.

On the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, broke it, and gave it to his friends, saying: Take, eat; this is my body, broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

Each time we eat this bread we will remember him.

After supper he took the cup and gave it for all to drink, saying:

Take, drink. This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people. Do this in remembrance of me.

Each time we drink this cup we will remember him.

Come, Holy Spirit, hover over us and this bread and wine. Unite us and strengthen us to live Christ’s resurrected life in the world.

           Come, Holy Spirit, come.

As we share this bread and cup, may we know the presence

of the Living Christ and cry out: Christ is risen!

Hallelujah! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!

These are the gifts of God, for us, the people of God.

Come now, for all is ready.

THE SHARING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP

Please come forward to receive communion.

The Lord be with you.

           And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Tonight we gather around the table of the Lord.

Tonight we remember the special meal Jesus shared

with his friends on the night he was arrested.

During the meal, he took bread, broke it, and gave it to them saying:

“Take, eat. This is my body broken for you. Each time you eat this

bread, remember me.”

Each time we eat this bread, we will remember him.

Then he took a cup of wine and passed it to them saying: “Take, drink.

This cup is the new covenant of God, made in my blood. Each time you

drink this cup, remember me.”

Each time we drink this cup, we will remember him.

Send, O God, your Holy Spirit upon us and what we do here. Bless all who eat and drink at this table. Make us, while many, united. Make us, though broken, whole. Make us, despite death, alive. And so we cry,

           Come, Holy Spirit, come!

The gifts of God for the people of God. Come now, for all is ready.

RITUAL HAND WASHING & SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP

This evening you are invited to come forward for a Ritual Hand Washing

and Communion. As you dip your hands in the basin, remember your baptism and be thankful. You will receive the elements which will be served by intinction. You will be offered the bread and wine with the words, “the body of Christ broken for you” and “the blood of Christ poured out for you.” The response to both of these is, “Amen.” Please take a piece of bread, dip it into the chalice, and eat it. Then return to your seats.

ANTHEM

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

We thank you, holy God, for giving us this meal. We give thanks that

bread broken brings wholeness; that wine pour out replenishes; that time spent with Christ and one another is both gift and grace. Send us forth in faith, hope and love. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
